Nigerian media personality Tomike Adeoye has voiced her disapproval of the widespread practice of requiring nannies to wear uniforms when accompanying children to public places.
In a video posted on her Instagram page, Tomike described the practice as humiliating, emphasizing that nannies should simply be neat and well-dressed, rather than set apart by uniforms.
I can never understand why people insist on having their children’s nannies wear uniforms in public, she said.
It’s very humiliating. It immediately identifies them as ‘the nanny,’ especially at events where everyone else, including the children, is dressed up.
Imagine attending a party, looking glamorous, your kids are adorable, and then their nannies are made to wear uniforms.”
Tomike also criticized parents who speak harshly to their nannies, stressing that caregivers deserve respect because they take on the crucial role of looking after children in their employers’ absence.
As long as you’re taking care of my child, you become part of my family,” she explained.
My husband once overheard one of our nannies telling her boyfriend, ‘Even my madam cannot speak to me like that.’ If someone comes into my home and leaves with greater self-worth, then I know I’ve made a positive impact. Life shouldn’t be so hard.
