Afrobeats superstar Davido is set to headline a landmark three-night residency at Lagos’ National Theatre from December 17 to 19, aiming to show that African artists can create world-class music experiences at home while boosting the local economy and celebrating Nigerian culture.
Speaking to CNN, Davido emphasized the significance of bringing his global success back to Nigeria. “Bringing everything back home is very important for the culture,” he said. The residency will feature live performances from his latest album, “Oriadé,” alongside his biggest hits and special guest appearances from collaborators.
The idea for the residency took shape after Davido’s extensive African tour last year—his first in eight years—which reignited his creative spark and underscored the importance of connecting with his roots. “Being home gave me so much inspiration,” he told CNN. “It feels better doing it from where you’re actually from. I don’t ever want to take that kind of break again away from my fans back home.”
Davido drew inspiration from Bad Bunny’s 30-date residency in Puerto Rico, which became a major tourist attraction in 2025 and generated significant economic and cultural benefits for the island. “It was like a whole tourist attraction,” he said. “The country (Puerto Rico) made money, he made money, he promoted his culture.”
He hopes that his Lagos residency will also draw international visitors, especially during “Detty December,” a festive season when Nigerians in the diaspora and tourists flock to Lagos for concerts and celebrations. “The talent in Lagos is mind-blowing. Talent is like water here,” Davido noted.
The newly renovated National Theatre is central to his vision, serving as a symbol of Nigeria’s rich entertainment heritage. “It’s like our own MSG (Madison Square Garden),” Davido said, highlighting the importance of showcasing world-class facilities in Africa. “We’re really showing people that we can do this ourselves.”
