The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has apprehended a suspected armed robber and recovered two locally-made pistols and two machetes in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area.
The arrest followed a distress call received by police operatives in the early hours of September 14, 2026, after a violent incident was reported in Ikot Ekweng village.
According to a statement issued in Uyo by Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, officers on patrol were dispatched to the scene at about 5:00 am after an emergency alert from the Command Control Room.
Upon arrival, the patrol team encountered Inspector Henry, who reported being attacked by one Ini Mfon. The suspect allegedly assaulted the officer with a machete while trying to steal his tricycle, resulting in a hand injury to the officer. The police operatives later traced the suspect to his residence, where he was arrested. A search of the premises led to the recovery of two locally-made pistols and two machetes, reportedly found in the suspect’s possession.
DSP John described the arrest and seizure as a significant breakthrough in the command’s ongoing efforts to combat violent crime and curb the circulation of illegal firearms. She noted that detectives are currently investigating the origin of the weapons, whether they had been used in previous crimes, and if the suspect is linked to other criminal syndicates within or outside the local government area. The suspect remains in custody and is assisting with the investigation. The recovered weapons have been secured as evidence.
Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the operatives for their swift response and professionalism, emphasizing that the arrest underscores the command’s commitment to tackling violent crime. He reiterated the command’s dedication to intelligence-led policing, targeted raids, and aggressive patrols aimed at recovering illegal firearms and dismantling criminal networks across the state.

He further assured residents that Akwa Ibom will not serve as a safe haven for armed robbers or those in unlawful possession of firearms, urging citizens to promptly report suspicious activities and the movement of illegal weapons to the police.
