The Federal Government has announced that it has no intention of raising electricity tariffs in Nigeria.
This assurance was given by the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, during a media briefing in Abuja on Monday, marking his first 100 days in office from June 8 to September 16.
Addressing journalists, Tegbe said he received numerous inquiries over the weekend following speculation about a possible tariff hike.
He dismissed these reports as politically motivated, particularly with general elections approaching next year, and emphasized that the administration’s priority is to enhance electricity supply for Nigerians.
The minister also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to transition to renewable energy and conduct a comprehensive audit of the nation’s power infrastructure to identify and address critical gaps.
Tegbe’s remarks come at a time of concern about the financial sustainability of Nigeria’s electricity market and the future of government support for the sector.
He acknowledged that the power industry faces widespread challenges across the entire value chain, stressing that simply increasing generation capacity will not resolve these complex issues.
