Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, has shared his reasons for choosing not to showcase his wealth on social media.
In a recent interview with Jam FM, the 26-year-old artist addressed the intense pressure many young Nigerians feel when they see celebrities and influencers leading extravagant lifestyles online.
Rema explained that he is mindful of the influence he has on youth, noting that many young people aspire to achieve the success he enjoys.
A lot of young people look up to me, whether they are fans or not. I have something they want or dream of, so I do my best not to make anyone feel bad about themselves or feel pressured,” he said.
Everybody has their time, but some people just want to rush it because they see their fellow young person doing well. Sometimes people tell me not to worry about how my lifestyle might affect others, but I know some will misinterpret it if I flaunt my wealth. I care about the kids who are under pressure.”
He also pointed out that the pressure on young people doesn’t only come from social media. According to Rema, parents can contribute to this stress by comparing their children to others and pushing them into fields of study they have little interest in, all in the pursuit of well-paying jobs. “A lot of kids are in school studying what they don’t want to study because their parents want them to have good jobs. I don’t want anyone to rush their journey or feel pressured because of me,” he added.
Rema emphasized his preference for simplicity, sharing that he enjoys streetwear over designer fashion. “I really don’t wear too many designer brands. The only things that are truly lavish about me might be my chains or watches,” he concluded.
