Two top FIFA officials, CONCACAF president Alfredo Hawit and his CONMEBOL counterpart Juan Ángel Napout, were arrested in a Zurich hotel, where another seven officials from the same organisation were arrested in May, on corruption charges at the request of the US Department of Justice.
The two arrested men will be held in custody pending possible extradition to the United States. The US Department of Justice accuses them of accepting bribes of up to “one million dollars” in exchange for the sale of TV rights for football tournaments in Latin America and World Cup qualifying matches. According to information passed from US authorities to their Swiss counterparts, a number of these crimes were agreed and planned on US soil and the payments were made though banks based there.
