Paul Robinson, Brad Friedel, Peter Schmeichel. Yes, goalkeepers can and do score from time-to-time whether aided by a freak gust of wind or leaping heroically to meet a corner in the dying seconds. Now, we can add South African goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke to the list of goal-scoring goalies after he earned his Baroka side an unlikely draw over Orlando Pirates with a last-gasp winner from a corner.
But this was no mere header or a stroke of luck from a long free-kick. In fact, Masuluke scored the kind of goal that would have left even Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi chuffed with themselves.
Trailing 1-0 with seconds left on the clock, Masuluke made his way forward after his team had won a corner deep into injury time.
The 23-year-old was able to meet the second ball after Jackson Mabokgwane’s sloppy punched clearance from a corner, allowing the ball to bounce before acrobatically swinging his foot over his head to send it over his counterpart and into the net.Cue pandemonium in the Peter Mokaba Stadium with Masuluke running to the corner where he batted away onrushing team-mates and started what looked to be a well rehearsed dance routine.
Just how long Masuluke has been waiting to show his slick moves is anyone’s guess but he certainly deserved his moment in the limelight after an outrageous goal.
It gave the night a sense of justice as his Baroka side had dominated proceedings and missed a host of chances to rule out Justice Chabalala’s goal.
