New Super Eagles invitee Samuel Kalu was giving a standing ovation from both sets of fans at the a sold-out Atlantic Matmut as he was withdrawn from yesterday’s Europa league game between Bordeuxs and KAA Gent.
The 20 year old was once again outstanding as his new side Bordeaux defeated his former side KAA Gent 2-0 to advance to the group stage of the Europa league.
Kalu ran his former colleagues the Gent defenders ragged all day eventually winning a Penalty for his side which was converted by Jimmy Briand in the 64th minute.
Bordeaux had taken the lead as early as the 10th minute through striker François Kamano
Kalu was clearly the best player on the pitch with his pace skill and decisiveness. He was withdrawn in the 83rd minute for Zaydou Youssouf to rousing applause from both sets of fans.
Former U23 striker Taiwo Awoniyi was on for KAA Gent but couldn’t get on the score sheet and was replaced by Canadian young talent Johnathan David in the 63rd minute.
With the Victory Bordeaux join two other French sides Marseille and Rennes in the group stage of the Europa League.
Bordeaux will know their group opponents after the draw that will take place this Friday.
