Rabiu Kwankwaso, the Vice Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has stated that a government led by the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would reintroduce fuel subsidy, but with a new approach.
Speaking in an interview with Arise News, the former Kano State governor discussed fuel pricing and the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Kwankwaso explained that the NDC plans to make petrol more affordable for Nigerians by increasing investment in domestic refining.
When asked whether the party’s stance on subsidy might affect its campaign in the North-West, he responded, “We are bringing subsidy in our own way.
He elaborated that the government could build more refineries to boost local production and reduce reliance on imported petroleum products, which would help lower fuel prices.
If individuals in this country can build refineries, then the government should also be able to, under the right circumstances,” Kwankwaso said.
Our goal is for people across the country to buy fuel at a reasonable price. We in the NDC will do whatever it takes to bring down the cost of petrol.”
Kwankwaso also criticized President Tinubu’s decision to remove the petrol subsidy immediately after taking office in 2023. He pointed out that while the major presidential candidates supported subsidy removal, Tinubu’s swift implementation did not consider the potential consequences.
He removed the subsidy right away—on the very first day—without addressing all the related issues,” Kwankwaso noted.
