Ben Affleck explains awkward moment at Grammys, blames host Trevor Noah for surprise skit

Ben Affleck recently denied that he had a bad time at the 2023 Grammy Awards, clarifying that his viral unenthusiastic face was due to being caught off guard by host Trevor Noah for a skit. In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, the “Argo” director revealed: “I saw Noah approach and I was like: ‘Oh, God. They were framing us in this shot, but I didn’t know they were rolling”.

The skit involved Noah pretending to be on the phone with his mom after Sam Smith’s controversial performance of “Unholy,” and quipping: “Mom, it wasn’t the actual devil. No, they were just dressed as the devil, Mom.” During this moment, Affleck was captured having a conversation with his wife, Jennifer Lopez.

According to Affleck, he had been joking with Lopez and told her: “As soon they start rolling, I’m going to slide away from you and leave you sitting next to Trevor.” Lopez responded: “You better f-king not leave.”

After the moment went viral, fans and experts weighed in on the exchange. A lip reader thought Lopez told her husband: “Look more friendly. Look motivated.” A body language expert claimed the gesture was “reproachful” and an attempt to show “control.”

Lopez attempted to quiet the noise by taking to social media and sharing that she had the “best time” with Ben at the awards show. Multiple sources previously confirmed that Affleck was seen in a great mood backstage, and one insider shared an exclusive video of the actor laughing with Queen Latifah.

He had a ‘good time’ at the Grammys

Affleck clarified that he had a “good time” at the Grammys and that it was his “wife’s work event.” He recognized that he had gone to Hollywood events “pissed” or drunk “a bunch” in the past but that at the Grammys, “they were like, ‘He’s drunk.'”

Affleck revealed that he had gone to rehab for alcohol addiction in March 2017 and concluded, “I do think it disincentivizes people from making their lives better.” He also raised the issue of the stigma associated with addiction and how it can be quite inhibiting.

Despite the misunderstandings and speculations surrounding his expression at the Grammys, Affleck was able to shed light on the true nature of the moment.
