Leo Messi claimed his seventh Ballon d’Or Award on Monday, but the decision has split opinion and former Spain and Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas openly voiced his disapproval on social media.
The Argentine beat Robert Lewandowski and Jorginho to the prize, two players whose respective clubs – Bayern Munich and Chelsea – had far more successful seasons than Messi did with Barcelona.
“I find it more and more difficult to believe in these football awards,” Casillas wrote on social media.
For me, Messi is one of the five best footballers of all time but they must start to take note of who is the best player in a given season.
“It’s not that difficult. Others just make it difficult,” he concluded.
