Cristiano Ronaldo scores and gets closer to Ali Daei’s record

Portugal completed their European Championship warm-up with a 4-0 thumping of Israel on Wednesday evening, with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring yet another international goal.

Each half saw two late goals scored allowing Portugal to put some gloss on a performance that otherwise left a lot to be desired, but Cristiano Ronaldo – in scoring their second before half-time – moved one step closer to Ali Daei‘s record.

The Juventus forward bagged his 104th international goal in 175 appearances, leaving him just five shy of the Iranian’s record of 109.

Portugal had their fair share of chances but took until the 42nd minute to open the scoring through Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes. Cristiano then made it two just two minutes later.

The second half was again frustrating for the European champions before Joao Cancelo scored in the 86th minute and Fernandes added his second and his country’s fourth in stoppage time.

Portugal are in the so-called ‘group of death’ in the European Championship and kick off their tournament against Hungary on Tuesday before facing Germany and then France.
