Meta has announced new measures to reduce the spread of spammy content on Facebook and improve visibility for creators who share original and engaging posts.
In a statement on Thursday, Oluwasola Obagbemi, head of communications for Sub-Saharan Africa at Meta, said the update follows feedback from users who feel the platform often prioritises repetitive or low-quality posts.
We’ve heard from users that Facebook Feed doesn’t always surface fresh and engaging content that people enjoy, and spammy posts often crowd out authentic voices, she said.
Our goal is to continue creating an environment where creators who invest in meaningful content are recognised and rewarded.
These changes are part of our long-term investment in making Facebook a platform where creators can grow and people can connect through high-quality content.
Under the new measures, accounts that publish duplicate content, irrelevant captions, or excessive hashtags will have their reach limited and lose access to monetisation features.
The company added that spam networks that create hundreds of accounts to amplify the same content will also face reduced visibility on the platform.
Meta said it is increasing enforcement against fake engagement and impersonation.
The company also revealed that Moderation Assist, its comment management tool, has been upgraded to detect and auto-hide comments that may be linked to fake identities.
To better support creators, Meta said it is strengthening its Rights Manager tool, which helps protect original content.
It added that it is also updating its guidance to help creators succeed with authentic storytelling on the platform.
