
By lifting the most prized trophy in world football at the Maracana, Germany broke a curse and became the first European country to be crowned champions on the other side of the ‘pond’, in the seventh World Cup held in Latin America.
Uruguay won the 1930 tournament on home soil, Brazil watched on as ‘La Celeste’ tasted glory again in the ‘Maracanazo’ in 1950, but then the ‘Canarinha’ went home from Chile in 1962 and Mexico in 1970 as champions. Meanwhile Argentina delivered as tournament hosts in 1978 and repeated the success at Mexico 86.
As a result of Götze’s goal in extra time, Germany won their fourth world title and they did it in the Americas, sealing a double portion of history for Joachim Löw’s men.
