Goods destroyed as fire guts 10-storey Lagos market building

Clothing goods worth millions of naira were on Sunday destroyed when fire gutted the popular Mandilas building on Broad Street, Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State.

We gathered that the fire, which started around 1pm on Sunday, engulfed four floors of the 10-storey building, destroying goods worth millions of naira

A video of the fire scene sighted by our correspondent showed some traders rushing to the scene of the fire to recover their goods.

The Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, in a statement made available to us on Sunday, said the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.

The fire was said to have started from the first floor of the building and escalated to the fourth floor before the arrival of emergency responders.

Meanwhile, men of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, upon arrival at the scene of the fire, were able to curtail further spread of the fire.

Adeyese said, A warehouse in a ten-story building is on fire. The fire originated on the first floor and has now reached the fourth floor.

Ongoing firefighting operations by Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu Fire Stations on-scene. The cause is yet to be determined and no casualty was recorded.

Reacting to the incident, the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwoolu, disclosed that investigation was ongoing to unravel the cause of the fire while also calling for calm among residents of the state.

I would like to provide an update as relayed by our on-ground teams regarding the warehouse fire at Mandilas Building, Broad Street, Lagos Island. The fire originated on the 1st floor and got to the 4th. Currently, our brave teams from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu Fire Stations are actively engaged in firefighting operations.

The cause is yet to be determined, but investigations are underway. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. I’d like to urge everyone to remain calm as all of our first responders are working hard to bring the situation to a complete halt, Sanwoolu tweeted.

We reported that at least, four cows, three goats and an office building belonging to the National Council of Arts and Culture were lost to a late-night fire that gutted the National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos State on December 30.

The Head, Public Education Unit of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Amodu Shakiru, disclosed this in a telephone conversation with us on Sunday.

The fire was said to have started following a gas explosion in one of the offices within the site of the incident which left four cows, three goats and an office complex destroyed.

Also, several shops and goods were destroyed following a gas explosion that occurred at a market at the Council bus stop in the Ikotun area of Lagos State on December 23.
