Group Petitions Lagos Commissioner of Police, Calls for New Forensic Investigation in Mohbad Case

A civic group, Lagosians for Truth and Justice, has reiterated its demand for transparency, accountability, and an independent forensic investigation into the death of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

The group made this call in a petition to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, and copied the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu.

In the petition, signed by spokesperson Rotimi DaSilva and obtained by PUNCH Metro on Tuesday, the group expressed deep concern over ongoing contradictions and growing public distrust surrounding Mohbad’s death.

Mohbad passed away in September 2023, and the unclear circumstances of his death have sparked widespread reaction and demands for justice from both Nigerians and the international community.

Nearly three years later, the group noted, the investigation remains plagued by uncertainty, contradictions, and delays. The matter, they stressed, has gone beyond the realm of entertainment and now serves as a national test of confidence in the Nigerian justice system.

“We write once again regarding the deeply troubling and unresolved circumstances surrounding the death of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, whose passing continues to generate national concern, public distrust, and growing frustration among millions of Nigerians at home and abroad.

“Nearly three years after his death, Nigerians are still confronted not with certainty, but with contradictions; not with clarity, but with confusion; not with confidence in the investigative process, but with increasing suspicion, institutional silence, and prolonged delay.”

The group pointed out that issues highlighted in an earlier public letter, published nationally on December 12, 2025, remain unresolved despite growing public concern. Conflicting statements, disputed forensic reports, unresolved toxicology questions, and inconsistencies in witness testimonies have continued to fuel suspicion among the public.

According to the group, public trust in law enforcement cannot survive in the absence of transparency.

They called for a fully independent forensic review by credible experts whose findings would stand up to both local and international scrutiny. They warned that any process tainted by uncertainty or a lack of openness would fail to restore public confidence.

They also demanded an independently supervised DNA process to address the controversy over Mohbad’s paternity, insisting that the process must be transparent and professional to restore trust in its outcome.

The group further requested full disclosure of investigative procedures, including toxicology processes, chain of custody for samples and evidence, identities of laboratories involved, timelines for submissions and results, witness statements, and clarification of all public contradictions. “Justice cannot flourish in secrecy,” the petition read.

The group also urged the police to reexamine key witnesses and individuals linked to Mohbad’s final hours, ensuring the investigation remains free from interference or preferential treatment.

They stressed that the continued lack of a clear and conclusive resolution has only fueled speculation and further eroded faith in national institutions.

“The death of Mohbad revealed more than one tragedy. It highlighted the vulnerability of young Nigerians in exploitative systems, weaknesses in institutional communication, the fragility of public trust, and the consequences of opaque investigations. This matter cannot simply fade away with fluctuating media attention. Truth does not disappear because the public grows weary.”

The group concluded by urging the Lagos State Police Command and the Inspector General of Police to recognize the gravity of the moment, emphasizing that a transparent and professionally handled resolution would not only bring justice for Mohbad but also help restore public trust in Nigerian institutions. “Anything less will only deepen public distrust,” the statement added.

Efforts to reach the State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Adebisi, were unsuccessful as calls to her phone went unanswered and a text message sent to her had not been replied to at the time of filing this report.
