Haaland Scores as Norway Eliminates Côte d’Ivoire from World Cup

Erling Haaland struck a dramatic late winner to send Norway into the World Cup last 16, securing a 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in Texas on Tuesday.

The Manchester City star poked home from close range in the 86th minute, notching his fifth goal of the tournament and clinching Norway’s first-ever knockout stage win at a World Cup.

After a cagey opening, Norway seized the lead six minutes before halftime through Antonio Nusa, who curled in a spectacular goal after being set up by captain Martin Odegaard. The Côte d’Ivoire responded strongly, introducing Manchester United’s Amad Diallo after an hour.

Diallo immediately made an impact, first preventing a second Norway goal with a crucial goal-line block, then rifling in a brilliant equalizer in the 74th minute.

With extra time looming, Haaland showcased his predatory instincts, finishing off Patrick Berg’s cross to etch his name in Norwegian football history. Norway now faces five-time champions Brazil in New Jersey on Sunday, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

The match began slowly at the impressive, air-conditioned AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. Côte d’Ivoire threatened early through defender Ghislain Konan, who surged into the box but found only the side netting.

Tempers flared just before the first-half drinks break when Yan Diomande was brought down on a promising run, but Norwegian defender David Moller Wolfe escaped without a booking, to the ire of Ivorian players and fans.

Diomande, the 19-year-old winger reportedly bound for Paris Saint-Germain, was a constant menace down the left. Haaland saw little of the ball in the opening half, his best chance a tame header easily gathered by goalkeeper Yahia Fofana. But Nusa’s moment of brilliance gave Norway the advantage, prompting disbelief from Odegaard at his teammate’s stunning strike.

Norway pressed for a second before halftime, with Haaland denied by Ibrahim Sangare’s last-ditch block. Côte d’Ivoire, making their first appearance in the knockout rounds, started the second half on the front foot, earning their 10th corner and forcing Norway keeper Orjan Nyland into a smart save from Nicolas Pepe.

Norway came close to doubling their lead when Diallo cleared off the line following a corner. Moments later, Diallo capped his lively display by weaving past two defenders and finishing superbly to level the match.

But Haaland had the final say, breaking Ivorian hearts with his late goal. Nyland then produced a crucial save from Diallo’s free kick in stoppage time to preserve Norway’s win.

Norway will now prepare for a historic showdown with Brazil for a place in the quarter-finals.
