Kara Bridge Repairs Cause Gridlock on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

Kunle Bankole, a motorist, urged the authorities to implement a lasting solution to the persistent traffic congestion on the expressway.

He lamented, This problem persists because most of our leaders don’t use this road—it’s only the ordinary people who suffer.

Please, help us appeal to them to resolve the gridlock once and for all. It’s not difficult if the government truly wants to help us; they just seem to prefer subjecting us to unnecessary hardship.

In response, Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, encouraged motorists to remain patient and cooperate with traffic officials during the repair period.

Akinbiyi noted that the agency had anticipated the likelihood of congestion and issued a traffic advisory ahead of the repair works. He explained, We knew traffic would be affected, which is why we released a traffic advisory in advance.

We can only ask motorists to bear with us for now, as the repairs are essential to ensure smooth movement and the safety of road users along this corridor. Anyone without urgent business along this route should avoid it, and those who must use it should cooperate with our officials.”

PUNCH Metro reported on Monday that the Federal Government had announced a two-week project to replace expansion joints on the Kara-Berger Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, starting Tuesday, September 8, 2026.

According to Akinbiyi, the repairs—conducted in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Works and other stakeholders—will continue until September 22, 2026. He added that the intervention, directed by the Minister of Works, aims to address deteriorating expansion joints, enhance road safety, preserve the bridge’s structural integrity, and ensure smoother travel along the busy expressway.
