Macron joins calls for Mbappe to stay at PSG

French president Emmanuel Macron has said he hopes Kylian Mbappe stays at Paris-Saint Germain this summer. Macron was visiting the France squad ahead of Euro 2020 at their Clairefontaine base and spoke with a number of the players.

France are focussed on their opening group game against Germany on June 14, but rumours from outside the camp about certain players cannot help but reach them. Not even politicians can dodge questions on Mbappe‘s future.

“I want the players focussed on Euro 2020, I’m not going to talk about the future of players,” Macron told BFM TV.

PSG is a great club that has known how to develop him and it is important that he stays at PSG, for the club and for the French league.

“That said, I’m not going to pressure anyone on this, they are very personal decisions and I respect them.”

It seems that the 22-year-old’s future has become an affair of state. Not just the French state, either, with PSG‘s backing from the Qatari state and the next World Cup being held in Qatar also a major factor.

For the next few weeks, however, it is the hopes of the French nation that rest on Mbappe‘s shoulders, while Macron is also grateful for his contribution off the pitch.

“He is a kid admired by millions of French people,” Macron said, in relation to Mbappe promoting COVID-19 vaccinations.

When you see him on the pitch, you realise he sees things others don’t.

“He has an incredible intuition.”
