Messi has been diagnosed with fatigue in his left hamstring, and his return timeline remains uncertain

Lionel Messi has sparked fresh concerns just weeks before the World Cup after Inter Miami announced on Monday that he has been diagnosed with muscle fatigue in his left hamstring.

The update comes following Messi’s early substitution during Miami’s 6-4 victory over Philadelphia on Sunday, when the Argentine star left the pitch in the 73rd minute after clutching the back of his left leg. Although Messi walked off unaided and appeared untroubled, further medical tests on Monday confirmed the hamstring issue.

Inter Miami’s statement did not specify a timeline for Messi’s return, noting only that his recovery would be determined by his clinical and functional progress. This leaves uncertainty surrounding the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s fitness as Argentina prepares to defend its World Cup title in a tournament co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, starting June 11. Argentina’s opening match is set for June 16 against Algeria in Kansas City.

Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has carefully managed his playing time, often sitting out matches during busy fixture periods. Major League Soccer has now paused for the duration of the World Cup.

While Messi has yet to officially confirm his participation, he is widely expected to compete in what would be a record-equaling sixth World Cup appearance. Argentina’s squad is set to be announced next week, with the team scheduled for pre-tournament friendlies against Honduras on June 6 and Iceland on June 9 in the United States.
