Owo Blow” actor resumes acting career after stint as commercial driver

Veteran Nollywood actor Sunday Afolabi, widely recognized for his role in the classic Yoruba film Owo Blow, has returned to acting after a hiatus during which he reportedly worked as a commercial driver in Lagos.

The news of Afolabi’s comeback was shared by fellow actor Adeniyi Johnson, who posted a photo of him on a movie set via Instagram on Sunday. Johnson’s post signals a fresh start for the seasoned actor, who is now featuring in a new production, ILEKE. The film is produced by Johnson’s wife, Seyi Edun (popularly known as Shai), and directed by Adebayo Tijani.

Ladies and gentlemen, @sundayafolabi22 is back! Available for shoots in and out of Lagos—even Naija! Versatile and professional to the core! Johnson wrote, indicating that Afolabi is actively returning to the industry.

Afolabi’s return follows weeks after a viral video surfaced online, showing him around a Lagos commercial minibus. In the video, he was seen assisting passengers, adjusting seats, and calling out destinations—typical of commercial transport operators. The footage stirred widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians voicing concern over the actor’s well-being as he appeared noticeably older and leaner.

In a 2025 interview with actor Kunle Afod, Afolabi spoke candidly about his personal and financial struggles, including the loss of his wife, which profoundly impacted his life and career. He explained that taking up commercial driving was a pragmatic move to sustain himself while waiting for acting opportunities.

Afolabi, who rose to prominence in the Yoruba movie scene of the 1990s and early 2000s, has featured in several notable productions, including Luwo Gbagida (2025), The Lost Heir (2018), and The Herbert Macaulay Affair (2019). However, like many of his contemporaries, his appearances in mainstream projects diminished as the industry evolved with new faces and changing production styles.

Before his recent comeback, his last known screen appearance was in the Africa Magic series Itura in 2023.

Afolabi’s return to the set has been met with widespread relief and excitement from fans and colleagues, many of whom had earlier called for support for the veteran actor following the viral video.
