French actress Marina Vlady, renowned for her roles in over 80 films and winner of the Best Actress award at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival, has died at the age of 88, her family announced on Thursday.
According to a statement from her children, Vlady passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her loved ones and her animals, after what they described as a long and beautiful life, well lived.
Throughout her illustrious career, Vlady collaborated with cinematic icons such as French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard and Hollywood legend Orson Welles.
Her acclaimed performance in “The Conjugal Bed” earned her both the Cannes Best Actress honor and a Golden Globe. In 1965, she took on a rare English-language role in Welles’s adaptation of Shakespeare, “Chimes at Midnight.
Born to a former dancer and a French army aviator who also sang at the opera, Vlady’s artistic talents extended beyond the screen. She recorded two successful music albums alongside her sisters, further highlighting her versatile career.
