Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has passed away at the age of 84. His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced his death on Instagram on Wednesday.
In their statement, the family remembered Jacobs as “The Lion of Lufodo” and requested privacy during this difficult time. They expressed gratitude for his remarkable life, writing:
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle.
The Lion of Lufodo. Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs (MFR) 11/07/1942–16/09/2026. We call on all bloggers and social media influencers to respect our family’s privacy at this time.”
Olu Jacobs was celebrated as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished actors, widely acclaimed for his work in theatre, television, and film. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England and began his career in Britain, performing with repertory theatres and appearing in British television and international films.
Upon returning to Nigeria, he became a central figure in the country’s film industry and a revered pioneer of Nollywood.
Jacobs received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007, the Industry Merit Award at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, and the MAA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016.
In 2011, he was honoured with the national title of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.
He is survived by his wife, fellow veteran actress Joke Silva, and their family.
