The U.S. military announced it has successfully enforced a naval blockade on Iran, halting all maritime trade to and from the country.
A blockade of Iranian ports has been fully implemented, said Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), in a post on X late Tuesday.
Cooper added that U.S. forces have maintained maritime dominance in the Middle East and, within less than 36 hours of the blockade’s initiation, had completely stopped seaborne trade with Iran.
CENTCOM, in a separate post, noted that U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers participated in the operation.
The statement emphasized that the blockade is being enforced impartially against vessels of all nations attempting to enter or leave Iranian coastal areas or ports.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following unsuccessful talks in Islamabad between Washington and Tehran over the weekend.
The blockade aims to prevent Iran from generating income by charging transit fees for passage through the strait and to cut off the country’s oil revenues.
