During an engagement with the international media in the United Kingdom, Minister of Information and Orientation Mohammed Idris addressed the issue. The meeting was part of ongoing preparations for President Tinubu’s upcoming state visit to the UK.

We recognize that Nigeria has faced its share of criticism regarding certain policies implemented at home, Idris said. Some of these criticisms stem from a lack of adequate understanding, while others are simply mischievous.

Highlighting the significance of the visit, Idris noted the longstanding partnership between Nigeria and the UK. This visit underscores the historical and strategic relationship between our two countries, built on deep diplomatic, economic, cultural, and democratic ties,” he stated. For decades, Nigeria and the United Kingdom have shared cooperation in trade, education, security, and cultural exchange.

He added that President Tinubu’s visit presents an opportunity to enhance collaboration in key areas such as trade and investment, security, climate action, education, and technological innovation. It also reflects Nigeria’s rising profile as a key democratic and economic partner in Africa and a responsible actor on the global stage, Idris said.

The Nigerian delegation includes ministers and presidential aides. Idris emphasized the importance of open communication: As communicators, we believe it’s essential—regardless of differing viewpoints—to review recent programmes and policies, engage with you, answer your questions, and consider your feedback.

President Tinubu is set to be hosted by King Charles III in what is anticipated to be a landmark event in UK–Nigeria relations. The visit will combine royal ceremonial traditions with high-level meetings aimed at strengthening economic, diplomatic, and strategic ties.

In anticipation of the visit, King Charles hosted a reception for members of the Nigerian diaspora in the UK. The event featured jollof rice and live music by Dele Sosimi and the Afrobeats Orchestra. The Royal Family described the evening as wonderful, expressing gratitude to attendees on its official X handle.

Security preparations for the state visit are underway, with UK authorities imposing airspace restrictions over Windsor Castle and deploying armed officers, search teams, and other resources throughout Windsor.

The Royal Family previously announced that President Tinubu, accompanied by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, had accepted King Charles III’s invitation for a state visit from March 18 to 19, 2026. This will be the first state visit to the UK by a Nigerian leader in 37 years.
