Wayne Rooney can now call himself England’s outright leading scorer of all time after notching up his 50th goal for his country in emphatic style from the penalty spot against Switzerland.
The Manchester United striker has left Sir Bobby Charlton in his wake, having drawn level with the 1966 World Cup winner on 49 goals with another spot-kick in the win over San Marino at the weekend.
Charlton’s record tally for the Three Lions had stood for 45 years. Gary Lineker, for so long the second in line thanks to his 48 goals in an England shirt, now lies third in the charts, while Jimmy Greaves and Michael Owen round off the top five on 44 and 40 respectively.
