Taiwo Akinwande, the Nigerian actress popularly known as Yetunde Wunmi, has reflected on her experience two decades after her arrest for a drug-related offense.
In September 2006, Wunmi was apprehended by officers of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos while attempting to travel to Europe.
She was found in possession of cocaine and subsequently sentenced to two years in prison.
In a recent interview with Feel Right TV, Akinwande recounted the events surrounding her arrest, expressing disbelief at how she found herself in such circumstances. She revealed that she once had the gift of foresight but could not understand why it seemed to abandon her at a critical moment, even though she had dreamt of the incident twice.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Akinwande now considers it an act of divine protection, wondering if it prevented her from facing an even graver misfortune. She expressed deep gratitude to God and made a personal vow never to repeat her mistake. She also acknowledged the overwhelming support she received from friends, acquaintances, and strangers alike.
“Before the incident that led to my ban from entering London, on the day I was arrested, I kept asking myself, ‘Why me? How did I get here? Am I awake or dreaming?’” she recounted. “I used to have a gift that allowed me to foresee things before they happened, but I don’t know why I lost it. I dreamt about the incident twice.
“Sometimes, while driving, I would wonder if my experience was God’s way of shielding me from something far worse. I would even think, ‘What if my car just explodes?’ It was during that period that everything happened.
I am grateful to God, because what if something greater had happened to me? I also made a vow to never make such a mistake again. Many people supported me, including those I had never met before.”
