A fatal accident occurred at the busy Badagry Roundabout in Lagos on Monday morning when a cement-laden truck lost control and crashed into a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer and two commercial motorcyclists, killing all three instantly.
The incident took place around 9 am. According to an eyewitness who requested anonymity, the truck was speeding towards the junction when the driver lost control, veered off its lane, and struck the victims. At the time, the LASTMA officer was directing traffic, while the motorcyclists were waiting to pick up passengers.
A police source, who also spoke on condition of anonymity, said the accident caused heavy traffic gridlock in the area. Law enforcement agencies, including LASTMA officials, police officers, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Federal Road Safety Corps, were quickly deployed to manage the situation.
The driver of the truck was apprehended at the scene and taken into custody. The victims’ remains were evacuated to a hospital mortuary, and the truck was impounded as investigations began.
Yusuf Sanni, unit commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the incident and the driver’s arrest. Sanni attributed the crash to a loss of control and advised motorists to avoid the area. He also confirmed that the victims’ bodies had been deposited at the hospital mortuary and the truck was secured at the police station.
CSP Folajimi Agosile, Divisional Police Officer of Badagry Police Station, stated that the driver would be arraigned at the Chief Magistrates’ Court upon the completion of investigations.
Attempts to reach LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq for further comment were unsuccessful as of the time of this report.
This tragedy comes just three days after LASTMA reported a separate fatal accident at Ekoro Junction, inward Abule-Egba, which claimed one life and left four others rescued last Friday evening.
