Nenadi Usman Elected as Labour Party National Chairman

Senator Nenadi Usman has been elected as the National Chairman of the Labour Party during the party’s national convention held in Umuahia, Abia State, on Tuesday.

The announcement was made by Ken Asogwa, the party’s National Publicity Secretary.

Other elected members of the National Working Committee include Rt. Hon. Iheanacho Obioma as National Secretary, Mrs. Nike Oriola as Deputy National Chairman, Ken Eluma Asogwa as National Publicity Secretary, Mrs. Oluchi Oparah as National Organising Secretary, Comrade Anslem Eragbe as National Financial Secretary, and Hilda Dokubo as National Women Leader, among others.

Following their election, the new National Working Committee was sworn in and has since assumed office.

Senator Usman previously led the party’s National Caretaker Committee after being appointed at a NEC meeting in Umuahia on September 4, 2024. She also received recognition as Chairman of the National Caretaker Committee from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on January 30, 2026, following a Federal High Court ruling on January 21, 2026, which affirmed her leadership — a decision that was subsequently upheld by the Court of Appeal on April 21, 2026.

A former Minister of Finance and Senator, Senator Usman brings considerable experience to her new role. As the 2027 general elections approach, she is tasked with strengthening the party’s position following its strong performance in the 2023 elections.

In her acceptance speech, Senator Usman thanked party members for their trust and vowed to steer the party toward greater achievements. She also praised Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti for his leadership, promising not to let him down in her new role. Senator Usman emphasized her commitment to unity, peace, and reconciliation within the party ahead of the next general elections.

Governor Otti, in his remarks, urged the new National Working Committee to provide effective leadership and to reinforce the party’s structures across the country.
