Their persistence paid off as they scored twice to draw level, reigniting hopes of a dramatic turnaround. However, San Pedro’s resolute defence denied Rivers United a winner, and the match ended in a draw.
With the aggregate score at 3-3, San Pedro advanced to the next round on away goals, leaving Rivers United to rue their slow start and missed opportunities. The result was a bitter blow after their promising start to the domestic season, which saw them beat Plateau United 2-0 in their opening Nigeria Premier Football League match.
Ultimately, Rivers United showed great determination and resilience, but the damage from the first half proved insurmountable. San Pedro progress in the Champions League, while Rivers United’s continental campaign ends in disappointment.
