Police in Ogun State have rescued eleven Ghanaian nationals who were allegedly held captive in Sagamu after being lured to Nigeria with false promises of Canadian and Spanish visas.
DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, confirmed the rescue in a statement issued Tuesday in Abeokuta.
According to Babaseyi, following actionable intelligence received on Monday, operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit mobilized and raided the suspected hideout, successfully rescuing the victims—seven men and four women—during the operation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims were deceived by a fellow Ghanaian who claimed he could arrange their travel abroad. Each victim reportedly paid GH₵40,000 before being brought to Nigeria and subsequently held against their will.
Babaseyi added that the rescued individuals are now receiving care and support, while detectives are working to apprehend additional suspects linked to the criminal network.
Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, praised the Anti-Kidnapping Unit for their swift action and professionalism. Ojajuni reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives, combating transnational crime, and protecting the public from exploitation.
He assured that efforts are ongoing to ensure those responsible are brought to justice. The Commissioner also advised the public to thoroughly verify overseas travel and visa processing arrangements before making any payments, and to promptly report any suspicious activities to the police.
