Banker Chukwuebuka Nweke Sentenced to Prison for Embezzling Customer Funds

Chukwuebuka Nweke, a former banker, was convicted on Monday by Justice Ismail Ijelu of the Lagos State High Court in Ikeja for stealing ₦1 million from a customer’s account.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought Nweke before the court following an investigation that revealed he had, on June 21, 2025, in Lagos, unlawfully accessed a desktop computer assigned to Emmanuella Anyanwu.

Using this access, he made an unauthorized withdrawal of ₦1 million from the account of Leelee Dumbari, held at a new generation bank.

According to the EFCC, Nweke’s actions violated Section 386(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. After investigations, the Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 of the EFCC arraigned Nweke on a one-count charge of unlawful withdrawal of funds.

Nweke pleaded not guilty, leading to a full trial during which the prosecution, represented by counsel M.K. Bashir, called five witnesses, while the defense called one witness.

Justice Ijelu ultimately found Nweke guilty and sentenced him to pay a fine of ₦1 million within 30 days. If he fails to pay the fine, he will serve six months in a Correctional Centre.
