Andy Ruiz: “God made me a chubby champion, this is not a body contest

Andy Ruiz, the first Mexican to become world heavyweight champion, is a few days away from returning to the ring against “King Kong” Luis Ortiz and, after the controversy over his split with Canelo Team and criticism for his physique, the “Destroyer” says he is 100% focused on defeating his opponent, in search of a new title shot.

While to his critics he says that the attacks only motivate him, because that way he always gives an extra in training. In an interview with ESPN’s David Faitelson, Andy Ruiz explained that to compete in his division “there is no physical contest”, since the priority is to develop other qualities such as: strength, speed and agility.

“I don’t need to be that weight to have the power. I want to be strong and that’s how we’re going to be. My dad tells me that ‘God made me a chubby champion’ and that’s how I am. I carry the weight well. This is not a body contest,” said Andy Ruiz.

However, he acknowledged that when he won the title after surprisingly defeating Anthony Joshua, he didn’t focus as he should have and that’s why he lost in a regrettable way in the rematch. But from that point everything has changed and he will prove it against Luis Ortiz.

All those who don’t support me, motivate me. They are not the ones who are up in the ring taking the punches. There were times when it was true, I wasn’t focused on the fights like I had to be, but now I have my gym and I’m more motivated,” said Andy Ruiz.

Andy Ruiz vs. Tyson Fury?
About his opponent, Andy Ruiz highlighted that the Cuban boxer is a good fighter who “has punch and that’s what counts in heavyweights”.

“One punch can change the whole fight and that’s what we have to take care of. Since he is a southpaw, we have to change my style.”

If we win in September, they say (his next fight) can be against Deontay Wilder if he comes out of retirement or fight Usyk or Joshua but first I have to beat Ortiz. Against Wilder is a fight that everyone would like to watch Andy Ruiz.

Finally, “Destroyer” indicated that he would like to face the big guys in his division, regardless of the difference in size and power in his fists.

I would like to face Tyson Fury. I look more against tall fighters. I’m not saying that Usyk is short but I’d like to fight Tyson Fury, it would be a very tough fight,” said Andy Ruiz.

The fight between Andy Ruiz and Luis Ortiz is scheduled for September 4 at the Crypto Arena in Los Angeles, California.
