Bayern Munich missed a golden chance to pull clear at the top of the Bundesliga after being held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by rivals Borussia Dortmund in a tense derby clash on Saturday night.
With Bayer Leverkusen stumbling to a 0-0 draw earlier in the day, Bayern had the opportunity to tighten their grip on the title race. But despite dominating for large spells, poor finishing and defensive lapses cost Die Roten dearly.
Michael Olise was bright early on, linking up well with Thomas Müller and Harry Kane, but the breakthrough remained elusive in the first half. Kane came closest before the break with a stinging effort, only to be denied by Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel.
Against the run of play, Dortmund struck first in the 48th minute as Maximilian Beier rose above Kim Min-jae to nod in a deep cross from Julian Ryerson. Bayern, stunned, responded with intensity, and substitute Raphael Guerreiro finally found the net in the 65th minute after a clever layoff from Müller.
Moments later, Serge Gnabry, also off the bench, danced through the Dortmund defense to slot home a second, seemingly putting Bayern on course for a vital win.
But Dortmund refused to lie down. Bayern’s failure to deal with a corner saw Waldemar Anton scramble the ball home after a late save from Jonas Urbig, earning the visitors a share of the spoils.
Harry Kane, under the spotlight after a Champions League miss midweek, was again wasteful, striking the post late on in a moment that could’ve sealed all three points. His struggles continued with just 70% pass completion and a lack of clinical finishing.
The draw leaves Bayern’s title hopes in the balance, especially with a tricky Champions League quarter-final second leg against Inter Milan looming, following a 2-1 home defeat in the first leg.
Meanwhile, Dortmund will head into their own uphill UCL battle with Barcelona, knowing they must produce something special to stay alive in Europe.
