BNXN Responds to Fat Joe’s Claim About Name Change, Urges Him to ‘Educate Yourself’

BNXN, the Nigerian artist, has addressed recent comments made by US rapper Fat Joe, who claimed responsibility for BNXN’s name change from Buju.

During a podcast appearance with Jamaican dancehall legend Buju Banton, Fat Joe referred to BNXN as an impostor for using the Buju moniker. He further alleged that BNXN only changed his stage name after being confronted on The Wendy Williams Show.

In response, BNXN fired back in a now-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter), accusing Fat Joe of harboring animosity and spreading falsehoods about African music and its artists. He urged the rapper to seek proper knowledge about the industry.

The hate in your heart and your misinformation about African music and its artists is why your chromosomes are all messed up. Educate yourself, bozo. @fatjoe, BNXN wrote.

In subsequent posts, BNXN emphasized that, despite his anger, he strives to remain respectful and believes mutual respect is essential. He also expressed appreciation for those who supported him during the controversy.

Even in my most intense moments, I strive to maintain my sense of humanity. Respect me, and I will respect you, he emphasized.

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has shown support, whether through words or actions. Your love and encouragement mean the world to me.

In 2022, BNXN revealed that he had changed his stage name from Buju. While he did not specify the exact reason for this decision, a search for Buju online often brings up results related to Buju Banton, the renowned Jamaican dancehall artist.

Earlier, the singer shared that he chose the name Buju after discovering its Jamaican origins and significance. He later created an acronym from it: Buju stands for Beauty Underneath Just Understood. This phrase was inspired by a poem he wrote during his university days. In Jamaican patois, Buju also refers to breadfruit and is a common nickname for chubby children—a connection he felt resonated with him personally. That’s why I crafted the acronym; that’s what Buju meant to me at the time, he explained.
