Curaçao Secure Historic First World Cup Point in Stalemate Against Ecuador

Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room delivered a heroic performance on Saturday, as the small Caribbean nation secured its first-ever World Cup point in a dramatic 0-0 draw against Ecuador.

Despite facing relentless pressure—Ecuador, who finished second in South American qualifying, unleashed 28 shots, including 15 on target in Kansas City—Room was unbeatable, producing a breathtaking display in goal.

The draw keeps Curacao’s hopes of advancing to the knockout stage alive, fueling their remarkable debut on football’s biggest stage. With a population of just over 150,000, Curacao became the smallest country ever to compete at a World Cup, and they have Room—the Miami FC goalkeeper—to thank for this historic result. His 15 saves are the most recorded in a World Cup match (excluding extra-time) since 1966.

This result restores pride for Curacao after a heavy 7-1 defeat to Germany in their opening game. The team’s achievement was celebrated online: “History! Our first ever point at the @fifaworldcup,” Curacao posted on X.

Ecuadorian fans turned Arrowhead Stadium into a sea of yellow, vastly outnumbering Curacao’s supporters, but Curacao had their own royal backing with Dutch King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima cheering them on. As an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Curacao’s 26-man squad is managed by veteran Dutch coach Dick Advocaat and features 25 players born in the Netherlands, many of whom play their club football there.

The match began at a frenetic pace, with Ecuador nearly scoring in the third minute as Enner Valencia broke through, only for Room to deny him with a superb save. Curacao responded on the counter, as Sherel Floranus sent a shot over the bar. Valencia again failed to convert from close range, and although Ecuador dominated possession (65% in the first half), they struggled to break Curacao’s disciplined defense.

Ecuador came closest to scoring just before the hour, but Room pulled off another vital save from Gonzalo Plata’s header. As the match wore on, Curacao grew in confidence and created opportunities of their own, while Ecuador, ranked more than 50 places above their opponents, became increasingly frustrated.

In the closing moments, Ecuador substitute Angelo Preciado’s mis-hit cross bounced off the crossbar, but Curacao held firm. At the final whistle, Room was mobbed by his teammates, celebrating a historic point.

Ecuador’s attacking woes continue they have yet to score in two World Cup matches, after netting just 14 times in 18 qualifiers. There are things you cannot explain in football,” said Ecuador coach Sebastian Beccacece. We wanted to win, we didn’t do it. I am responsible, but as long as my team gives everything, I have no complaints.

Earlier in the day, four-time champions Germany came from behind to beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in Toronto, clinching a spot in the round of 32. Curacao’s draw guarantees Germany will top the group. Ecuador face Germany on Thursday, while Curacao will take on Ivory Coast next.
