Things appear to be spiraling further out of control for embattled hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs as one of his lawyers, Anthony Ricco, has filed a motion to withdraw from his legal team. This latest development adds to the growing turmoil surrounding the music executive, who is currently incarcerated and awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking, sexual abuse, and racketeering.
Ricco submitted his request in February 2025 through an affidavit filed in a Manhattan federal court. In his statement, he made it clear that he could no longer effectively serve as Combs’ counsel, writing, *“Under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs. It is respectfully but regrettably requested that the court grant the relief requested.”*
However, Ricco did not provide further details regarding his reasons for stepping down. He only noted that his decision came after discussions with Combs’ lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo. His withdrawal, however, is not yet final, as a judge must review and approve the request before he is officially relieved of his duties.
The Legal Battle That Changed Everything
Sean Combs’ legal troubles began when he was arrested on September 17, 2024, at the Park Hyatt Hotel on 57th Street in Manhattan. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) took him into custody after an extensive investigation into allegations of sex trafficking, sexual abuse, and racketeering. His arrest followed a string of accusations that first surfaced when his ex-girlfriend, singer Cassie Ventura, filed a lawsuit detailing years of alleged abuse. Since then, multiple other women have come forward with similar claims, fueling the prosecution’s case against him.
Combs has remained in custody since his arrest, as legal experts suggest the severity of the charges makes bail unlikely. Prosecutors allege that he operated a criminal enterprise in which women were exploited and trafficked under the guise of his music empire. If convicted, he faces decades behind bars.
A Defense Team in Crisis?
Ricco’s decision to withdraw from Combs’ legal team raises questions about the defense’s strategy and whether internal tensions are affecting their approach. Though Combs still has other high-profile lawyers representing him, losing a key legal mind at this stage could signal deeper problems within his camp.
His lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo, has assured the court that Ricco’s departure will not delay the trial, which is currently set for May 2025. However, with the high stakes involved, any disruption to his legal defense could impact his ability to fight the charges.
Health Concerns Behind Bars
In addition to his legal troubles, Combs’ health has also been a cause for concern. Earlier in February, the rapper was reportedly rushed out of his prison cell for medical attention. Sources claim he was taken to a hospital under heavy security to undergo an MRI scan. The late-night transfer was carried out discreetly to prevent attracting the attention of other inmates or prison authorities.
After completing the procedure, Combs was returned to his cell a few hours later and did not spend the night at the hospital. While details of his medical condition remain unclear, the incident has fueled speculation about the rapper’s well-being as he prepares for trial.
