Donarumma didn’t realise Italy had won when he saved Saka’s penalty

Italy won Euro 2020 in dramatic fashion via a penalty shootout after an emotionally charged final at Wembley Stadium, but goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma didn’t actually realise when he had won it for his team.

The 22-year-old saved two of England‘s five penalties, with the one from Bukayo Saka crowning Italy as champions, but Donnarumma only knew that when he saw his teammates rushing towards him.

“I didn’t celebrate straight away because I didn’t realise we’d won,” Donnarumma told Sky Sport Italia.

“I was already down after Jorginho‘s missed penalty and I thought we had lost, but instead I had to continue.

“Then I saw my teammates coming towards me and everything started from there. I didn’t understand anything!”

The goalkeeper, who will join Paris Saint-Germain this summer, is not only a European champion but was also named player of the tournament, yet he remains hungry for more.

“I’ve still got everything to achieve, that has always been my strong point,” said Donnarumma.
