Enugu varsity shifts resumption to March 21 over election

The management of Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI) in Enugu has shifted the institution’s resumption date to March 21 following the postponement of the governorship and state assembly elections.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) earlier fixed March 11 for the elections.

But on Wednesday, the commission announced that the elections will now hold on March 18.

In a statement on Thursday, Christian Anieke, GOUNI’s vice-chancellor, said the institution will no longer resume on March 15 as earlier scheduled.

They said the shift in the resumption of academic activities by the students had been approved by the Senate of the University. The students are now expected to resume on March 21st for the second semester of the 2022/2023 academic session,” he said.

The vice-chancellor said the move was to allow students of the institution to participate in the elections.

Anieke said the senate of the university did not want a situation where the students would resume and then return to places they registered to cast their votes on election day.

The vice-chancellor informed the students that there would not be another break once they return on March 21.

He said the institution would operate three months of uninterrupted teaching followed by examinations as soon as students return to the campus.
