Nigerian rapper and actor Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has shared insights into why he chose music over practicing law, despite holding a law degree.
Falz, who was called to the bar in 2012 after studying law at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom and attending the Nigerian Law School in Abuja, revealed that his music career quickly brought him widespread recognition. He admitted that balancing both professions became nearly impossible as his popularity grew.
During an appearance on the Behind The Story podcast, Falz recounted how maintaining a legal career while pursuing music proved to be a significant challenge. He recalled an instance when a judge recognized him in court for his music and entertainment activities, which highlighted the potential distractions his fame could cause.
“There was a day in court when I announced my appearance, and the judge asked, ‘Aren’t you the one doing something else on the side?’” Falz said. “Imagine becoming even more famous and then showing up in court. It could create distractions and make some clients think I’d be too busy with music and other ventures. It would have been tough because my face was already everywhere.”
