The six-episode thriller, adapted by BAFTA-nominated writer Theresa Ikoko, is based on Nikki May’s debut novel and will be available on BBC iPlayer and BBC One.

The BBC announced the cast on Tuesday, unveiling a female-led ensemble including Adelayo Adedayo, Deborah Ayorinde, Cush Jumbo, Susan Wokoma, and Nnaji herself.

Wahala follows four Nigerian-British women as they navigate careers, friendship, love, and family in contemporary London—while confronting dark secrets from their pasts. The main trio—Simi, Boo, and Ronke—are played by Adedayo, Jumbo, and Wokoma. Their close bond is tested by the arrival of Isobel, portrayed by Ayorinde.

According to producers, the series delves into betrayal, hidden truths, and the fallout of long-concealed secrets.

Expressing her excitement, Nnaji said: I’m very happy to be joining Wahala and to be working with such a brilliant team. It’s an intriguing story and I’m excited to be a part of it.

This marks one of Nnaji’s most significant acting roles since her acclaimed directorial debut, Lionheart, which premiered in 2018 and was released on Netflix in January 2019.

Widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most influential figures, Nnaji has kept a low profile in recent years, heightening anticipation for her comeback.

Produced by Firebird Pictures, a BBC Studios company, Wahala takes its name from the Nigerian Pidgin word for trouble.
