Johnny Depp’s Hollywood comeback is gaining momentum as Lionsgate debuts the first trailer for his new action-thriller, Day Drinker, co-starring Penélope Cruz and Madelyn Cline.
Directed by Marc Webb, the film marks a significant return for Depp to major studio productions after several years away from mainstream releases.
In Day Drinker, Depp takes on the role of a mysterious guest aboard a private yacht, where he becomes entangled with a bartender, played by Cline, and a criminal figure portrayed by Cruz.
According to the official synopsis, the story centers on the bartender’s encounter with Depp’s enigmatic character, pulling her into a dangerous web of intrigue and unforeseen connections. The cast also features Manu Ríos, Arón Piper, Juan Diego Botto, and Anika Boyle.
This film is Depp’s second major studio release since 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Following his much-publicized 2022 defamation trial with former wife Amber Heard, Depp made a cinematic return in the French historical drama Jeanne du Barry, which opened the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, and also directed Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness. He is set to appear in Ebenezer, an upcoming adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, before Day Drinker arrives in theaters.
The thriller also marks the fourth collaboration between Depp and Cruz, who previously worked together on Blow (2001), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011), and Murder on the Orient Express (2017). Day Drinker is slated for release on March 26, 2027.
