King Charles Calls for Western Unity in Address to US Congress

Britain’s King Charles III called on the United States to stand steadfast with its Western allies amid mounting strains over Iran and Ukraine, warning that transatlantic ties face their most serious test in years.

Delivering a rare address to Congress, Charles avoided direct references to tensions between President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, instead emphasizing that the US-UK partnership, though “born out of dispute,” remains robust and enduring.

The speech was met with a warm reception, even as Charles touched on challenging subjects such as climate change, the importance of checks and balances on presidential power, NATO’s role, and the defense of Ukraine—topics particularly sensitive for Republican lawmakers.

The challenges we face are too great for any one nation to bear alone,” Charles said, urging deeper cooperation between the United States and its traditional allies to address global threats.

Marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, the king stressed the need for unyielding resolve to secure a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, which has continued to resist Russia’s full-scale invasion since 2022.

Earlier, President Trump welcomed King Charles and Queen Camilla to the White House at the start of their four-day state visit, describing Britain as America’s closest ally. During a ceremonial welcome on the South Lawn, complete with a 21-gun salute, Trump struck a warmer tone than in his recent public remarks about Starmer.

In the centuries since we won our independence, Americans have had no closer friends than the British, Trump declared, celebrating the special relationship and the nations’ enduring military partnership.

The occasion saw military pageantry, with cannons firing, a band playing both national anthems, and Charles inspecting the troops alongside the president. Four American jets then roared overhead in a dramatic flypast as Trump, Charles, Camilla, and First Lady Melania Trump looked on.

The visit comes at a sensitive time, with Trump openly critical of Britain’s position on Iran and other policies. Nonetheless, the president adopted a lighthearted tone, joking about his Scottish-born mother’s admiration for the king during Oval Office talks.

He’s a fantastic person. They’re incredible people and it’s a real honor, Trump told reporters following the private meeting.

In his address to Congress—the first by a British monarch since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991—Charles highlighted the two nations’ shared democratic heritage, calling Congress a “citadel of democracy” and pointing to the common legal foundations rooted in the Magna Carta, which he noted has been cited in over 160 US Supreme Court cases. He drew applause from Democrats by underscoring the importance of checks and balances on executive power.

Charles also stressed the depth of US-UK defense, intelligence, and economic ties, calling them “hardwired together” and central to the alliance.

Security was heightened for the visit, following an alleged assassination attempt on Trump at a weekend media gala in Washington. Such acts of violence will never succeed,” Charles declared.

The royal couple’s state visit will conclude with a formal dinner, blending ceremonial tradition with delicate diplomatic engagement.
