Adekunle Gold, the acclaimed Nigerian singer, has opened up about his decision to take legal action against an X user who falsely claimed that his daughter, Deja, had died.
In a recent interview on One54 Africa, Gold recounted how he immediately reported the incident to authorities upon seeing the post.
He emphasized that while he is open to public scrutiny and criticism directed at him, he draws a firm boundary when it comes to his family. “You can talk about me all day, I’m cool. I signed up for this, not my daughter. When I saw the news, I did the right thing and reported it to the authorities,” he said.
The case was taken to court, where the individual responsible received a two-year prison sentence, with the alternative of paying a fine. Gold noted that social media often misrepresented the situation, but he was committed to pursuing justice through proper legal channels. “The whole internet went crazy. I didn’t do what some others might have done, like finding and confronting the person. I just followed the right process, and the law took its course,” he explained.

The incident originated from a post by Samuel Adeboye Adeyeye, known online as Swanky 001, who shared a photo of a candle along with the message: “My sincere condolences to the Adekunle family. RIP to Deja.” On May 14, social media influencer Pamilerin Adegoke revealed that Adeyeye had been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to charges of cyberbullying and defamation. Adeyeye was released in June.
Adekunle Gold married fellow singer Simi in a private ceremony in January 2019. They celebrated their first wedding anniversary in 2020, the same year they welcomed their first child. The couple welcomed their second child on March 10, 2026.
