Lagos Assembly Lawmakers Reject Obasa, Insist Meranda is Speaker

The leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly has intensified as 36 lawmakers have rejected Mudashiru Obasa’s claim to the Speaker’s seat, reaffirming Mojisola Meranda as their legitimate leader.

What Happened?

Obasa, who was removed as Speaker, entered the Assembly complex on Thursday, accompanied by security officials and two lawmakers—Ayinde Akinsanya (Mushin Constituency I) and Noheem Adams (Mushin Constituency II). His arrival followed the withdrawal of security aides attached to Meranda.

Speaking at the Assembly complex, House Committee Chairman on Information, Security, and Strategy, Steven Ogundipe, dismissed Obasa’s claim to the position, urging the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership to intervene.

Why Was Obasa Removed?

Over 90% of the lawmakers accused Obasa of:

  • Poor leadership style
  • Lateness to legislative functions
  • High-handedness and disregard for colleagues and the governor
  • Abuse of office and intimidation of members

APC Leaders Step In

In a bid to resolve the crisis, former governors of **Osun, Ogun, and Lagos—Chief Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode—**held a series of meetings with lawmakers and stakeholders.

Reports indicate that both Obasa and Meranda may step aside for a neutral lawmaker, likely from Lagos West, to assume the Speaker’s role.

What’s Next?

As tensions rise, all eyes are on the APC leadership to make a final decision on who will lead the Assembly going forward.
