Liverpool thrash United at Old Trafford

Liverpool handed Manchester United a severe 3-0 beating at Old Trafford, which saw David Moyes’ wounded side fall further behind in the Premier League. The Reds, wearing white today, climbed provisionally into second place on 62 points, four points adrift of league leaders Chelsea, who lost on Saturday away to Aston Villa (1-0)

Steven Gerrard scored twice from the spot (34th and 46th minutes) to seal Liverpool’s win. He even had a third spot-kick (78th minute) for a non-existent foul by Serbian Nemanja Vidic – who was sent off for a second yellow card -, but his shot found David de Gea’s right post. United were a shadow of their former self and simply failed to react. Uruguayan Luis Suárez pounced on the rebound from a Daniel Sturridge shot to calmly send his left-footed effort past De Gea for Liverpool’s third of the game (84th minute).

It was a punishing blow for United, who now languish in seventh place, eighteen points behind Chelsea. They’re still in the Champions League, but must come back from their 2-0 first-leg defeat at the hands of José Miguel González ‘Michel’s’ Olympiakos side, recently crowned Greek champions. With their win, Liverpool are still firmly in the race for the Premier League title.
