The product rollout has sparked widespread backlash on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern about the high price of the menstrual kit, especially given the country’s current economic challenges.
Critics argue that the reported N25,000 price tag makes the product unaffordable for the average Nigerian girl, at a time when many families struggle to afford basic necessities. Some have labeled the campaign as tone-deaf, pointing to the ongoing issue of period poverty and the lack of access to affordable sanitary products for millions of women and girls across Nigeria.
However, some social media users defended the product, saying the value of the package justifies its cost.
One X user wrote, “Nigerian celebrities can be so out of touch when they jump into business ventures. Who exactly was Mercy Johnson aiming to sell those N25,000 sanitary pads to?”
Another user countered, “I’m not even a fan of Mercy Johnson, but surely y’all can see she created that period care box with her daughter and girls of that age in mind. Y’all haven’t met young girls entering puberty and it shows with these comments.”
A third user added, “Mercy Johnson should stop with that fooling. If she’s really serious about helping the girl child and ending period poverty in Nigeria, she should donate those pads.”
