Peter Obi: My Vice President Will Not Be a ‘Spare Tire’ in Government

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election, has pledged to lead an inclusive administration, promising that his running mate, former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, would serve as a full partner in governance rather than a ceremonial deputy.

Obi made this commitment while accepting his nomination as the NDC presidential candidate, shortly after officially naming Kwankwaso as his vice-presidential pick on Saturday.

He emphasized that his administration would break away from the tradition of marginalizing deputy leaders, stating, “The government we intend to form will no longer be one where the vice president is seen as a spare tyre. The vice president will be a partner, because we want to build a nation where two equal leaders work together for the country’s greatness. Decisions will be made in partnership, with everyone consulted. That is how government should function.”

The former Anambra State governor explained that this approach reflects his commitment to consultation, shared responsibility, and effective governance.

Obi invited Kwankwaso to join him on the ticket, describing him as a leader who shares his priorities on education and security. “It is on this note that I graciously accept the affirmation as the candidate of this great party. And in the same spirit, I am inviting Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to join me as the vice-presidential candidate. He believes in education and security, and we will work together to ensure progress in these critical areas.”

Obi stressed that their partnership would be anchored on a shared vision for national development and a determination to tackle Nigeria’s most pressing challenges.

Reiterating his campaign message, Obi told supporters that “a New Nigeria is Possible,” emphasizing that the project transcends individual ambition. “This pivotal moment goes beyond Peter Obi’s personal aspirations; it is about our nation’s future and the well-being of our children. It is about restoring hope for millions who have endured hardship but remain committed to Nigeria.”

Obi also identified insecurity as a major threat to the country’s progress, pledging decisive action to restore public safety and confidence. “We must address insecurity with resolve and urgency, for no nation can thrive while its citizens live in fear. The primary responsibility of government is to safeguard lives and property.”

He recalled Nigeria’s history of contributing to international peacekeeping missions, noting the global respect once earned by the country’s armed forces. Obi concluded that restoring security, strengthening institutions, and fostering national unity would be central goals of the administration he hopes to lead with Kwankwaso.
