Rangers manager Danny Rohl has commended Nigerian defender Emmanuel Fernandez for his display of leadership during a heated on-field dispute with teammate Tochi Chukwuani, stating that the incident proved to be a catalyst for the team’s dramatic second-half revival.
Rohl emphasized that the charged atmosphere within the squad was evidence of increasing leadership and accountability among the players.
Discussing his team talk at half-time, Rohl underscored the importance of honesty, mutual trust, and tactical adaptation as the keys to Rangers’ turnaround. “We were honest with each other at half-time. I especially liked that the players were also honest with each other, which helps,” Rohl told the Daily Record.
He continued, “It was more important to give them my trust and make them believe in what we are doing. The other part was about what we had to adjust. We changed our pressing a little bit. We allowed the opponent too many long balls in behind. It was better in the second half. We were more hungry and front-footed, which helped.
The flashpoint followed a chaotic first half in which Rangers’ defensive lapses led to early goals conceded, leaving players visibly frustrated and exchanging blame. Fernandez confronted Chukwuani over his involvement in the build-up to the goals, prompting a brief exchange before Chukwuani responded by pulling a goal back just before the break.
Rather than intervening forcefully, Rohl explained that he allowed tempers to cool in the dressing room, encouraging open dialogue among the players. The team returned to the pitch with renewed focus and determination in the second half.
While Fernandez has already made his debut for Nigeria, Chukwuani—who is of Nigerian descent—has represented Denmark at youth level since 2019, making his last appearance for their U-20 side three years ago, and is still awaiting a senior call-up.
On the pitch, Rangers delivered a commanding second-half performance, with goals from Youssef Chermiti and Nicolas Raskin, and further contributions from Bojan Miovski, turning the tide as Rangers took control of the match.
Raskin, in particular, stood out with his influential display, playing a key role in several goals through his passing and forward runs, as Rangers’ dominant second-half showing highlighted their growing resilience and unity as a team.
