Real Madrid secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, with Vinicius Jr and Kylian Mbappe delivering the goals that kept them level on points with La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Madrid started brightly but struggled to convert early pressure into clear chances. Mbappe eventually broke the deadlock in the 30th minute with a trademark cut inside and precise finish. Four minutes later, Vinicius Jr doubled the lead with a brilliant solo effort, his shot taking a deflection on its way in.
However, Rayo Vallecano responded just before halftime, as Pedro Diaz unleashed a stunning strike to keep the visitors in the game.
The second half saw Madrid dominate but waste several chances to kill off the match. Vinicius Jr and Mbappe both came close but lacked the clinical edge to extend the lead. Rayo, despite staying competitive, failed to create any real danger in the closing stages.
While Madrid will be relieved to take all three points, the performance was far from convincing. With Barcelona having a game in hand, Ancelotti’s side must sharpen their attack as they shift focus to a crucial Madrid derby against Atletico on Wednesday.
